Water vole Christmas card
This munchy little mammal is a water vole. When they aren’t sneaking Santa’s cookies, they can be found along river banks eating 80 percent of their body weight in grass stalks and reeds every day.
Water voles suffered huge declines in the 1990s, when the UK population dropped by an astonishing 90 percent - largely due to the spread of American mink. Mink were brought to the UK and bred for their fur, but several escaped the farms and quickly established in the countryside.
PTES has been involved in water vole conservation for decades and in 2015, launched the National Water Vole Monitoring Programme. They have worked out how best to help water voles, and now need the help of volunteers to survey and monitor populations.
