Red deer Christmas card

Red deer Christmas card

Red deer migrated to the UK some 11,000 years ago and, despite the destruction of large swathes of their forest habitat, can still be spotted in Scotland and pockets of England. Their impressive antlers can grow up to a metre wide and are used primarily as a status symbol; as a general rule of thumb, the more baubles you can dangle from your antlers, the better.

Red deer don’t have any wild predators. Their threats come from elsewhere (humans, of course). Loss of habitat has limited the range of red deer and they are sometimes persecuted in areas they are thought to cause damage to commercial tree plantations. Nevertheless, the UK’s red deer population remains fairly stable and they are common in Scotland’s highlands and islands.
