Curlew Christmas card
With their long legs and fantastic curved beaks, curlews are much-loved wading birds. The UK is home to around a quarter of the world’s curlew population, so is of international importance when it comes to their conservation.
As seems to be the common thread, curlews were once widespread around the UK’s coasts but recently, populations have declined steeply. Between 1995 and 2008, populations in the UK dropped by 42 percent. Curlews are struggling to breed successfully, and this seems to be largely due to the agricultural intensification of land.
The RSPB has been trialling habitat management and predator control measures at six sites to identify the best methods for UK-wide curlew conservation initiatives.
