Scottish wildcat Christmas card
The last native cat in the UK, the Scottish wildcat holds an important ecological role in the control of small mammals like rabbits, hares and rats.
The subspecies was hunted and persecuted in Scotland, but now the biggest threat to this highlands tiger is interbreeding with, and disease transmission from, domestic cats.
Some organisations have been undertaking large-scale neuter and vaccination programmes for domestic cats in areas where wildcats are present. The UK’s first wildcat conservation breeding for release centre is being built in Scotland, which should help maintain Scottish wildcat populations through strategic reintroductions.
