House sparrow Christmas card
The lovely house sparrow is a familiar garden and park visitor to most of us in the UK (and, in fact, to people on every continent apart from Antarctica!)
In the 1990s, scientists noticed a sudden, significant decline in sparrow numbers in the UK’s towns and cities, but it wasn’t obvious what was causing the drop in numbers.
Results of initial studies suggested that a lack of invertebrate prey was a big problem. When sparrows were provided with extra mealworms, the nesting success in cities rocketed. Unfortunately, it soon became clear that this isn’t the only problem; though nesting success increased, the overall colony sizes hardly changed. And so, the mystery remains! Researchers continue to study house sparrows to try and identify the problem.
