Basking shark Christmas card
Basking sharks are the second biggest fish in the world’s oceans and between May and October each year, they can be spotted from coastal parts of the UK, including the Hebrides, Isle of Man and Southwest England.
For years, the sharks were actively hunted and killed for their liver oil, meat and fins. This hunting is still going on (now illegally) and their numbers continue to decline. Basking sharks have been protected under all sorts of legislation since the 1980s, but their recovery will be a slow one.
