Badger Christmas card

Badger Christmas card

These icons of the British countryside are protected under law in the UK and the population has been on the rise – it is thought to have doubled since the 1980s! Their biggest threat is traffic; badgers are the most commonly killed species on British roads, probably because they are nocturnal and use the same routes to roam to and from their setts for generations (whether or not a road has been built through it).

If you want to feed your garden visitor but don’t have buckets of earthworms to hand (they can get through several hundred a night!), you can leave badgers fruit, raw peanuts or brazil nuts, or dried dog food. Feed them irregularly and vary how much you leave so they don’t become too reliant on your treats. Top tip: use the red light function on your headtorch (or put a red sweet wrapper over your torch) to spy on your garden badgers without scaring them off.
