  • Conservation story

This guy is a handsome western lowland silverback. I’ve done a gorilla portrait before but there is always more to say about the world’s largest primate! This time, let’s talk Ebola.

As if they didn’t have enough to contend with, Ebola has had an enormous impact on the western lowland gorilla population. In the early 2000s, some time before the Ebola outbreak in humans, the virus caused the deaths of hundreds of these critically endangered apes. Gorillas are sentient beings and, like humans, are thought to mourn their dead with touch and grooming. This act could partly explain the rapid transmission of disease through a population.

To keep an eye on the situation, vets are monitoring wild gorillas for signs of disease - a task that isn’t too difficult given that most gorillas have been habituated to humans. If any signs are noted, the vets and park authorities will meet to decide whether to intervene.

To protect gorillas (and so humans) from Ebola, some scientists are calling for certain groups to be vaccinated against the disease, but a vaccination programme would not be cheap, nor easy. In the meantime, conservation efforts are focused on monitoring and anti-poaching efforts, as well as all-important programmes to raise awareness around the dangers of eating bushmeat.
